Road to Glory: Scott Quigg must produce a “Rocky Balboa” performance to beat Rendall Munroe, according to coach Joe Gallagher

Joe Gallagher insists Scott Quigg will need to produce a Rocky Balboa-like performance if he is to overcome the stern challenge of Rendall Munroe at Manchester Velodrome.

Quigg’s trainer has likened Munroe to the famous “hard-as-nails” character Mr T from movie Rocky III.

But Gallagher, who also coaches unbeaten light-heavyweight prospect Callum Johnson, is confident Quigg (24 wins, 0 losses) will match Rocky’s power and spirit in beating Munroe.

“I have always called Rendall Munroe, Mr T,” Gallagher told Lincboxing. “He is hard-as-nails, fast, sharp and always in great condition. He never needs motivating because it comes naturally to him.

“He will keep coming at us and won’t give up on anything. He is a class fighter.

“We’ve all seen the Rocky movies and Scott is going to have to produce a Rocky-like performance when he beats Mr T in the rematch.

“It might sound ridiculous but that’s how I view it.”

Quigg and Munroe, both in terrific shape, will battle it out for the interim WBA World super bantamweight title in front of a packed arena.

Despite Quigg entering the ring as a clear favourite, many pundits are struggling to separate the two fighters.

The experience lies with former world title challenger Munroe – who has won 24 and lost two.

Gallagher will take charge of Quigg’s corner for only the third fight in the 23-year-old’s career and expects a tough night for the Bury man.

“Training has gone very well indeed,” added Gallagher. “I haven’t been working with Scott for long but he says this is the best training camp he has ever had.

“He has done more than 100 rounds sparring and broke his personal best time over a seven-mile run. He is ready to go.

“Rendall Munroe is a southpaw and a good one at that. We have had many southpaw sparring partners in the gym and we’ve been working on all sorts of things.

“I predict a tough fight but a Quigg win.

“Munroe is a hard fighter and he hits hard without a doubt. But when Scott Quigg hits you, you feel it. It’s going to be a cracking fight and we will have to see what happens.

“We have done all we can and that’s why I think Scott will do it.”
