Sergey Rabchenko crowned new European light-middleweight champion after stopping Ryan Rhodes

Sergey Rabchenko has lifted the vacant European light-middleweight title after a brutal stoppage of Sheffield star Ryan Rhodes in Manchester this evening.

Undefeated Rabchenko (21-0), from Belarus, landed a crunching hook to the body of 35-year-old Rhodes towards the end of the seventh round.

Rhodes made the count at eight, but the referee had seen enough and stopped the bout.

Former world title contender Rhodes looked on top in the third after landing a splendid overhand right to the temple of Rabchenko.

But Rabchenko weathered the storm, proved he has a strong chin, and powered back to dominate most of the rounds.

The loss represents Rhodes’ sixth reverse of a glittering career.
