John Simpson rights the wrongs of previous loss to Paul Appleby with KO victory

JOHN Simpson proved to be  too strong, too fast and too accurate for Paul Appleby at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall, and in the process gained a measure of revenge.

Simpson knocked out Appleby in the sixth round of their Celtic super-featherweight contest and had looked on top throughout.

Appleby, who lost the fight of the year to Cromer’s Liam Walsh last September, was picked off almost at will throughout the contest and showed worrying signs of being a spent force – even at the age of 24.

Having already taken a standing eight count earlier in the round, a huge right sent Appleby, almost face-first, to the canvas.

Simpson, who dropped a narrow decision to the same opponent in June 2008, now improves to 23-9, while Appleby drops to 18-4.

“I was just too fast on the inside for him, I was catching him with uppercuts,” said Simpson.

“It was a great finish. I just felt the last few times at featherweight it was killing me, so hopefully this is the start of good things.

“Paul’s my friend, he was at my wedding, so just all the best to him – I hope he keeps going.”
